Understanding how UC calculates GPA helps you make smart course decisions. Here's what you need to know!

The Basics

What Counts in UC GPA

• Only A-G courses from 10th and 11th grade
• Freshman grades are NOT included in the calculation
• D and F grades don't count (must be C or better)

Point Values

Note: A+/A/A- all equal 4 points (no plus/minus distinction)

Weighted GPA (Honors Points)

UC-approved honors, AP, and IB courses earn 1 extra point.

Important Limits:

• Maximum of 8 semester courses can get honors points
• Maximum of 4 honors points from sophomore year
• Freshman courses don't get honors points in UC GPA

Example Calculation

• Regular class with A = 4.0
• AP class with A = 5.0 (4 + 1 bonus point)
• Honors class with B = 4.0 (3 + 1 bonus point)

Why This Matters for Freshmen

Even though freshman grades don't count in UC GPA:
