Research experience with a professor can be a wonderful addition to your profile, especially for STEM-focused students. Many professors welcome motivated high schoolers — you just have to ask!

Finding Professors

1. Visit websites of local universities
2. Browse faculty pages in departments that interest you
3. Read their recent publications to understand their work
4. Identify 10-15 professors whose research genuinely excites you

Email Template

Subject: High School Student Interested in [Specific Research Area]

Dear Professor [Name],

I am a junior at [School] with a strong interest in [specific area]. I recently read your paper on [topic] and was particularly fascinated by [specific aspect].

I am writing to inquire whether you might have any opportunities for a high school student to assist with research this summer. I have [relevant experience/coursework] and am eager to learn.

Realistic Expectations

• Most professors won't respond

Send 15-20 emails to increase your chances. Follow up once after 2 weeks if you don't hear back.
