Run for leadership positions

Overview

Many clubs and organizations hold elections in spring for the following year. Running for a position now sets you up for leadership junior year!

Why Run as a Sophomore?

• Junior year leadership looks impressive
• You'll have experience before senior year
• Shows progression in your activities
• Opens doors to more opportunities

Positions to Consider

• Officer roles: President, VP, Secretary, Treasurer
• Captain/Co-Captain: Athletic teams, academic teams
• Editor positions: Yearbook, newspaper, literary magazine
• Section leader: Band, orchestra, choir
• Committee chair: Event planning, outreach

How to Prepare for Elections

Before Announcing

• Show up consistently and do good work
• Volunteer for extra responsibilities
• Build relationships with members
• Demonstrate your commitment

Creating Your Platform

• Identify 2-3 realistic goals
• Know the organization's challenges
• Have specific ideas for improvement
• Be ready to explain your vision

Campaigning

• Talk to members genuinely
• Share your ideas enthusiastically
• Listen to others' concerns
• Be gracious to other candidates

If You Don't Win

• Ask for a committee role instead
• Show you're still committed
• Run again next year
• Look for leadership elsewhere
