Step-by-Step Guide

Overview

By mid-freshman year, you've had time to try various activities. Now it's time to start focusing on the ones that matter most to you.

Why Narrow Your Focus?

  • Quality over quantity
  • More time to go deep
  • Better chance for leadership
  • Less overwhelming schedule
  • More meaningful experiences

How to Decide What to Keep

Keep Activities Where You:

  • Genuinely enjoy the time spent
  • See potential for growth and leadership
  • Learn valuable skills
  • Connect with like-minded peers
  • Would participate even without "credit"

Consider Dropping Activities Where You:

  • Only show up out of obligation
  • Feel bored or uninvested
  • Don't see yourself continuing
  • Joined just because it might "look good"

The Magic Number

Aim for 3-5 core activities you'll commit to seriously.

You can still have casual interests, but your main focus should be manageable.

Questions to Ask Yourself

  • "Do I look forward to this activity?"
  • "What have I learned or accomplished here?"
  • "Can I see myself in a leadership role?"
  • "Would I miss this if I stopped?"

It's Okay to Quit!

Quitting activities that don't fit is SMART, not weak:

  • It shows self-awareness
  • It frees time for what matters
  • It's better than half-hearted participation
