How to Research Requirements

  1. Add schools to your Common App account (opens August 1)
  2. Visit each college's admissions website
  3. Search "[College Name] supplemental essays 2025-2026"
  4. Check essay databases like College Essay Guy

Common Supplemental Essay Types

  • "Why Us?" - Why do you want to attend this specific school?
  • "Why This Major?" - What draws you to your intended field?
  • "Community/Diversity" - What will you contribute?
  • "Extracurricular Elaboration" - Tell us more about an activity
  • "Intellectual Curiosity" - What do you want to explore?

Create a Tracking System

Set up a spreadsheet with:

  • School name
  • Number of supplemental essays
  • Word limits for each
  • Specific prompts
  • Deadlines
