Step-by-Step Guide

Overview

Continuing extracurriculars through second semester is not strictly required, but it's part of maintaining the consistency that got you admitted. It also matters for final transcripts, waitlist strategy, and personal growth.

Why Continue

  • Demonstrates sustained commitment (not just "resume-building")
  • Leadership roles often require year-end deliverables
  • Relationships with teammates and advisors matter for future references
  • Waitlist decisions sometimes consider updates on continued engagement
  • Personal fulfillment

What Not to Do

  • Drop a club to watch Netflix more
  • Give up your leadership role because "I already applied"
  • Skip team practices that affect teammates
  • Stop attending meetings at clubs you founded

Transitioning Roles

If you're transitioning leadership:

  • Recruit and mentor your successor
  • Document procedures for future years
  • Attend the transition meetings
  • Be part of the handoff, not just an absence

New Activities (Thoughtfully)

February-March is OK to:

  • Start a short-term project or internship
  • Audition for a play or musical
  • Join a new service project with clear scope
  • Participate in competitions or events

Not ideal to:

  • Start entirely new long-term clubs you won't finish
  • Add activities for "resume padding" post-application

Athletics

  • Spring sports: Commit fully; spring seasons run into May/June
  • Senior athletes often have captain roles and year-end responsibilities
  • College athletic departments may ask about current-season performance

Arts

  • Spring plays, musicals, concerts, exhibitions typically happen April-May
  • Committed participation continues
  • Performances are resume updates you can share with waitlist schools

Academic Teams

  • Debate tournaments continue through spring
  • Science Olympiad, Math Olympiad regionals/states/nationals in spring
  • Competitions won in February-April are updates worth sharing with waitlist schools

Service

  • Sustained volunteering matters more than hours
  • Continue the same organization through graduation
  • Leadership transitions happen in spring

Social Events

Senior class events (prom, senior trip, graduation activities) are fine and expected. Don't over-apologize for enjoying senior year.

Balancing

A reasonable senior second semester looks like:

  • 10-15 hours/week on extracurriculars (down from 15-25 earlier in HS)
  • Strong academic engagement
  • Time for family and friends
  • Some space for rest and reflection
