Do Not Submit On The Deadline
Servers crash on Jan 1. Common App has had outages every Jan 1 since 2017. Submit 3-5 days early. If you submit at 11:58 PM on Jan 1 and the system fails, most schools give no grace.
Pre-Submission Checklist (Per School)
- Personal statement and supplements proofread by at least one other person
- Activities section complete (not just pasted from UC or Coalition)
- Honors section complete (5 max on Common App)
- All optional essays that strengthen your candidacy completed
- Additional Information section used thoughtfully (not padded)
- FERPA waiver signed
- Recommenders have submitted (check per-school)
- School report and counselor letter submitted (check per-school)
- Transcript sent
- Test scores sent (if required or you're choosing to submit)
- CSS Profile submitted (if required)

Submission Procedure
- Review the application one final time (pay attention to typos in names, dates)
- Click submit
- Save or screenshot the confirmation
- Check your email for the confirmation from Common App
- Log in to each school's applicant portal within 48 hours and confirm status
After Submission
- Your portal will show a checklist of required materials
- Not all will appear immediately (recs and transcripts take 3-5 business days to register)
- Missing items after 7-10 business days warrant a polite email to admissions
Common Last-Minute Problems
- Teacher recommendation not submitted → email teacher politely
- Counselor materials missing → email counselor office
- Test score not visible → College Board / ACT delay is normal, wait 3-5 business days
- Application stuck on "in progress" → check for unsaved fields in your application
Mental Health Note
January 1 is a hard day. Submitting feels anticlimactic. Celebrate the submission itself - you did something difficult. Results come in March-April; use January for strong academics and mental rest.
