Overview

Most highly selective colleges release RD decisions mid-March to early April. Create a calendar.

Release Windows

Late March

• Most Ivies (Ivy Day)
• Stanford, MIT, Caltech (sometimes April)
• Duke, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, CMU, WashU, Rice, Northwestern

Early April

• Johns Hopkins, UChicago, Georgetown
• Middlebury, Tufts, Swarthmore, Amherst, Williams, Pomona

Mid-April

• Many small LACs
• Some honors programs

Portal Strategy

• Check 1-2x per day during release windows
• Email notifications sometimes lag
• Don't constantly refresh

Decision Types

• Accepted, waitlisted, denied

After Admission

1. Read decision letter
2. Review financial aid (1-2 weeks)
3. Compare to other offers
4. Attend admitted student events
5. Decide by May 1

Expectations

• Selectivity is real
• Admit rates 3-10% at top schools
• Hooks (legacy, recruit, first-gen) shift odds
• Profile doesn't predict individual outcomes

Handling Denials

• Acknowledge disappointment
• Don't catastrophize
• Many thrive at non-first-choice schools
• College outcomes depend on you

Handling Waitlists

• Accept the spot
• LOCI if true top choice
• Commit elsewhere by May 1
• Realistic: 0-15% waitlist movement

Admitted Student Days

• Early April if possible
• Attend panels, class visits, housing tours
• Trust your gut
• Look at community, not brochure

• Process before big decisions
• Open affordability discussion
• Make final decision together
