The single most reliable way to decide between the Digital SAT and Enhanced ACT is to give the student a structured taste of each and compare results. A full-length practice test of both takes 5+ hours combined and is overkill for the decision. A 90-minute structured diagnostic — taking comparable sections of each test under timed conditions — captures enough signal to make the decision confidently. The protocol can be done in a single weekend or split across two weekends. It costs nothing (all materials are free) and produces a clear answer for 80%+ of students. For students whose results are genuinely tied, section 4.8 covers how to decide.

For the SAT half:

Interpreting the 90-minute diagnostic results (percentile over absolute score)
Three patterns commonly emerge:
Pattern 1 — Clear winner on one test (60–70% of students). Concorded scores are 30+ points higher on one test (for SAT) or 1.5+ ACT points higher (for ACT). The student also reports feeling more comfortable with that test's format and pacing. Decision: Choose the higher-scoring test. Stop deliberating. Begin focused prep.
Pattern 2 — One test scores higher but the student prefers the other (15–25% of students). The student scored higher on the SAT but preferred the ACT's tempo (or vice versa). For these reasons, the diagnostic should inform the decision — not lock it in. After 2–4 weeks of prep on the chosen test, if the student is making faster progress than expected, continue. Common mistakes to avoid when running the SAT-vs-ACT diagnostic

The current table was released in 2018 and is based on 589,753 students from the 2017 graduating class who took both tests. The concordance maps equivalent percentile ranks: a 1480 SAT and a 33 ACT both fall at approximately the same percentile within the test-taking population, so they are concordant. The 2018 tables remain the official standard as of April 2026 — no newer concordance study has replaced them, and the College Board has confirmed they remain valid for the Digital SAT (the scoring scale is unchanged).

Concordance is not equating. Concordance compares scores across different tests. Equating compares scores within the same test (e.g., the SAT in March vs. the SAT in May). The ACT/SAT concordance is statistically valid for comparing two different tests at the population level, but it cannot perfectly predict an individual student's score on the other test.
Concordance is sample-dependent. The 2018 study used 2017 graduating seniors. As test-taking populations shift over time, the precise mappings may drift slightly. ACT and the College Board have not formally updated the concordance, and the 2018 tables remain the official standard, but score relationships at the margin may differ slightly today.
Section concordance does not equal section equivalence. A student who scores at the equivalent percentile on Section A of the SAT and Section X of the ACT does not necessarily have the same underlying skill — the sections measure related but different things. SAT Reading and Writing combines reading comprehension with grammar; ACT English is grammar-focused while ACT Reading is comprehension-focused.
Colleges should NOT superscore across the SAT and ACT. This is explicit in the concordance guide. Combining the highest section scores from the SAT with the highest from the ACT is not psychometrically valid and is strongly discouraged. Most colleges follow this guidance and superscore only within the same test.
Concordance applies to populations, not individuals. Two students with the same ACT score will not necessarily score the same on the SAT. The concordance describes the relationship between distributions of scores; individual variation is real.
What this means for the decision
The concordance table is a tool for comparing diagnostic scores across tests, not a guarantee that a student who scores X on one test will score the concordant Y on the other. Use it as one signal alongside qualitative experience, pacing fit, content fit, and prep responsiveness. 4.8 What If My Kid Scores Similarly On Both?
The genuinely tied SAT-vs-ACT case (similar percentiles on both)
About 10–15% of students who take the diagnostic in test_prep_kb:4.6 produce results that are genuinely close: concorded scores within 30 SAT points or under 1.5 ACT points, similar qualitative comfort with both tests, no clear pacing or content advantage. For these students, the right decision isn't obvious from the diagnostic alone, and a different framework is needed. This section walks through how to break ties.
The default answer: pick one and commit
Before the tiebreaker framework, the most important point: a tied diagnostic does NOT mean the student should take both tests. Splitting prep time across two different tests typically lowers performance on both compared to focused prep on one. Taking both tests is rarely the right answer even for tied students. The right answer is to pick one and commit.
The reasoning: focused prep on one test produces a higher concorded score than divided prep across both, in nearly all cases. A student who spends 60 hours preparing for the SAT will likely score 100+ points higher than they would with 30 hours of SAT prep + 30 hours of ACT prep. Even for tied students, focused prep wins.
When taking both tests genuinely makes sense (rare)
Three narrow cases where taking both tests is reasonable:
Case 1: The student has unusually large prep time and a balanced strength profile. A student starting prep in 10th grade with two years of runway, minimal extracurricular constraints, and tied diagnostics might reasonably prepare for both, take both, and submit the higher score. This is rare — most students don't have this much prep time.
Case 2: The student is applying to a program with specific requirements that vary by test. A few honors programs or scholarship competitions specifically value one test over the other (rare but exists). If the student's target program has such a requirement, the decision is forced — take that test. This is about constraint, not preference.
Case 3: The student has already taken one test and is mid-cycle considering the other. If a junior takes the SAT in March, scores below their target, and the diagnostic suggests the ACT might fit better, taking the April or June ACT to test that hypothesis is rational. This is sequential, not simultaneous — they're not preparing for both at once; they're trying the other after evidence the first isn't working.
Outside these cases, taking both tests is rarely the answer for tied students.
The five tiebreakers, in priority order
When the diagnostic is tied, use these tiebreakers in order. The first one that produces a clear answer breaks the tie.
Tiebreaker 1: Test format match to eventual test day
If the student will take the test at a school that uses one specific format (paper or digital), match the diagnostic and prep to that format. If the school's PSAT was digital and the student is comfortable with that interface, the SAT (also digital) is operationally easier — same login flow, same Bluebook app, same general experience. If the school's state-mandated ACT is paper, paper ACT prep is operationally easier.
Tiebreaker 2: Practice resource quality and availability
Some students have access to better prep resources for one test than the other. If the family already owns the College Board's Bluebook with 4–10 free practice tests and Khan Academy's Official Digital SAT Prep, but doesn't have ACT materials, the SAT is operationally cheaper to prep for. If the student's school provides ACT prep classes or has a strong ACT-tutoring counselor, the ACT may have better support locally. Whichever test has stronger available prep resources gets the edge.
Tiebreaker 3: Test date frequency and timing fit
Both tests are offered 7 times per year nationally, and dates roughly align. But the specific dates matter for the student's calendar:
- The Digital SAT is offered in March, May, June, August, October, November, December (US national dates).
- The Enhanced ACT is offered in February, April, June, July, September, October, December (US national dates).
If the student's targeted test month aligns better with one test's calendar, that's a small but real advantage. For example, a student who wants to take a late-summer test before senior year fall might prefer the August SAT or the July ACT depending on which fits their family schedule.
Tiebreaker 4: Score Choice and superscoring policy alignment
Both tests support Score Choice (sending only specific test dates to colleges) and most colleges superscore (combining the highest section scores across multiple sittings). Both tests have similar policies in this regard, but for some specific schools, the policy varies slightly:

Schools that require all SAT scores (Yale, Georgetown, Stanford for some applicants) — these schools see every SAT sitting. If the student is risk-averse about multiple SAT sittings being visible, the ACT may be operationally simpler.

Most students don't have schools with these specific requirements on their list, but if your kid does, it's a small tiebreaker.
Tiebreaker 5: Personal preference (last resort)
If all four tiebreakers above don't break the tie, fall back on the student's personal preference. Which test did they enjoy more during the diagnostic? Which test feels more familiar from school context? Personal preference matters less than fit, but in the genuinely tied case, comfort during 60+ hours of prep and a multi-hour test sitting has real value.
What if the tiebreakers also tie?
If the student is genuinely tied across diagnostic AND all five tiebreakers, the answer is: flip a coin. Pick one. Commit. Stop deliberating. The opportunity cost of further deliberation exceeds the expected value of any additional analysis.
This is a real situation: Solyo has worked with families who spent 6–8 weeks debating SAT vs. ACT for tied students. That 6–8 weeks of deliberation is 6–8 weeks of lost prep time. A student who picks "the SAT, I guess" and starts prep in week 1 outperforms a student who agonizes for 6 weeks and starts prep in week 7, even if the agonizer eventually picks the slightly better-fitting test.
Why the tied case is usually an artifact
A useful framing: most students who appear "genuinely tied" after one diagnostic actually have a real preference that emerges with more data. Five common patterns:
The diagnostic was contaminated by fatigue or anxiety. The student took both halves on the same day with no break, or they were anxious about the testing experience. A retake of just one diagnostic section under better conditions often reveals a clear preference.
The diagnostic missed a content area where the student is stronger. The 90-minute protocol covers English/Reading and Math but doesn't include ACT Science or full-length sustained focus. If the student is strong in science, taking ACT Science as part of the diagnostic may shift the balance toward the ACT.
Pacing fatigue showed in different sections. The student felt rushed on ACT English (early) and rushed on SAT Math (late, when fatigue accumulated). With proper pacing strategy and prep, the rush feeling diminishes — but on diagnostic day, both felt rushed.
The diagnostic scored on different scales. ACT scoring rounds aggressively (one missed question can move the section score 1 full point on certain forms). SAT scoring is finer-grained. A student close to a rounding boundary on ACT may have a misleading section score.
The student is genuinely all-around capable. Some students are simply strong on both tests. For these students, any choice is a good choice, and the tiebreakers in this section are how to choose.
Should I have the student take the real test of one and decide based on that?
A reasonable strategy for tied students: pick one test based on tiebreakers, prepare for 4–6 weeks, take an official sitting, and evaluate. If the score is at or above target, the choice was right.
