How the AP Calc AB exam is scored

AP Calculus AB splits evenly: 45 multiple-choice questions carry 50% of the exam and six free-response questions, each scored 0 to 9, carry the other 50%. Each multiple-choice answer is worth about 1.1% of your score and each FRQ point about 0.93%. Both sections have a calculator part and a no-calculator part.

The FRQs award partial credit aggressively. Setting up the correct integral earns points even if the evaluation slips, and a correct method carried through a wrong earlier value still scores. The students who suffer most on this exam are the ones who leave FRQ parts blank: a plausible setup is nearly always worth writing.

What do you need for a 5 on AP Calc AB?

AP Calculus AB has the lowest estimated 5 cutoff on this calculator: roughly 64% of the composite, with a 4 near 52% and a 3 near 39%. You can earn a 5 while leaving a third of the exam on the table: 32 of 45 multiple choice with 35 of 54 FRQ points does it.

The low bar reflects a hard exam, not a generous one. In 2026, 20% of students earned a 5 but 35% scored a 1 or 2. The calculator flags composites within three points of a cutoff as borderline, since College Board re-equates the conversion every year.

Where AP Calc AB points are actually won

Each FRQ is nine points spread over three or four parts, and the first part of each question is usually the most mechanical: evaluate, differentiate, read a value off a graph. Collecting every first part across all six questions is worth around 12 points, more than a full question, before touching anything hard.

Justification language is scored literally. "f is increasing because f prime is positive on the interval" earns the point; a correct conclusion without the reason does not. The exam rewards students who write one sentence of reasoning next to every answer, a habit worth building months before May.

AP Calc AB score questions, answered

What percent is a 5 on AP Calc AB?

About 64% of the weighted composite by our estimate, the lowest 5 bar of the twelve subjects on this calculator. For example, 32 of 45 multiple choice with 35 of 54 free-response points reaches it. Cutoffs are estimates; College Board does not publish them.

How are the AP Calc AB FRQs graded?

Six questions, nine points each, with heavy partial credit. Correct setups score even with arithmetic slips, and later parts are graded consistent with your earlier answers. Blank parts are the only guaranteed zeros.

Is a 4 on AP Calc AB good?

Yes. In 2026, 28% of students earned a 4 and only 20% a 5. A 4 earns Calculus I credit at most public universities and many private ones, though some engineering programs ask for a 5 or use their own placement exam.

Should I take AB or BC?

BC covers everything in AB plus series and additional integration techniques, and awards an AB subscore. If your school offers both and you are strong in math, BC one year later or instead is worth considering. If you plan to stop at one calculus course, AB with a strong score serves admissions and credit fine.

Do colleges see my AP scores?

Only if you report them. AP scores are self-reported on applications and sent officially only to the college you designate. A strong score supports your application; a weak one can simply be left off. Either way, the course itself and the grade you earned in it appear on your transcript and feed your weighted GPA.
