How 2026 students actually scored
Section weights are College Board’s. The 1-5 cutoffs are our estimates; the real conversion is set after each exam and is never published.
Every exam weighs its sections differently, which is why one generic converter gets most subjects wrong. Each calculator below is built on its exam’s real structure: APUSH weights a seven-point DBQ at a quarter of the exam, AP Psychology puts two thirds on multiple choice, AP Statistics weights its investigative task above its other free response. Call it an AP test score calculator, a grade predictor or a curve estimator: the honest version has three steps, and only two of them can be exact.
College Board publishes each exam's structure and section weights, and this calculator transcribes them: 45% multiple choice on AP Lang, a 25% DBQ on the histories, 66.7% multiple choice on AP Psychology. This step is exact.
College Board converts composites to the 1-5 scale with cutoffs equated each year for exam difficulty, and it stopped publishing them years ago. Ours are estimates built from the last released scoring worksheets and checked against current distributions. This step cannot be exact, for us or for any other calculator.
Any composite within three points of a cutoff is reported as borderline instead of as a clean prediction, because a three-point cutoff shift between years is normal. A calculator that never says "borderline" is hiding this.
The one number worth internalizing from all of this: on most AP exams the 5 cutoff sits between 64% and 75% of the composite. AP exams are not graded like classroom tests, and walking out feeling like you earned a B minus is entirely consistent with a 5.

Read the pass rate alongside it: AP Gov gave out the most 5s, while AP Calculus AB paired a high 5-rate with one of the lower pass rates, the signature of an exam that splits its takers.

Each exam produces a weighted composite from its sections: multiple choice is machine-scored, free response is scored by trained readers against public rubrics. College Board then converts the composite to the 1-5 scale using cutoffs that are equated each year for exam difficulty. The section weights are published; the year's exact cutoffs are not, which is why every score calculator, including this one, is an estimate.
A 3 is officially "qualified" and is the usual bar for college credit at public universities. Many selective colleges only award credit for a 4 or 5, and policies differ by subject within one college. For admissions rather than credit, the course on your transcript and the grade you earned in it matter at least as much as the exam score.

They are honest estimates, not official conversions. Section structures and weights here are transcribed from College Board's current exam pages, the score distributions are College Board's official 2026 numbers, and the cutoffs are our estimates from the most recent released scoring worksheets. Any result within three points of a cutoff is flagged as borderline rather than presented as fact.
The exam score does not touch your GPA. The AP course grade does: most high schools add a full point of weight for AP classes, so a B in AP Chemistry often counts as a 4.0 in a weighted GPA. Use our weighted GPA calculator to see exactly how your AP courses move your number.
Selective colleges read course rigor in context: the question their readers answer is whether you took the most challenging schedule reasonably available at your school, not whether you hit a universal count. Depth with strong grades beats a longer list with weaker ones. Course rigor is one of the admission factors colleges most often rate as very important in their own Common Data Set filings.
