Identify ED/EA schools

Overview

Start thinking about whether you want to apply early anywhere. This helps you prioritize summer essay writing!

Early Decision (ED)

• Binding - if admitted, you must attend
• Deadline: Usually November 1 or 15
• Decision: Mid-December
• Higher acceptance rates at some schools
• Only use if: This is your absolute #1 choice AND cost isn't a major concern

Early Action (EA)

• Non-binding - more flexibility
• Same timeline as ED
• Can apply to multiple EA schools
• Get answers early without commitment

Restrictive Early Action (REA)

• Non-binding but limits other early apps
• Schools: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Georgetown, Notre Dame
• Can still apply EA to public universities

Decision Framework

1. Identify which schools offer ED, EA, or REA
2. If you have a clear #1 with ED, consider using it
3. If no clear #1, use EA broadly
4. Always have Regular Decision options ready
