Time to start drafting your main personal statement! This 650-word essay is used for all Common App schools.

Common App Basics

• Word limit: 650 maximum (250 minimum)
• Aim for: 600-650 words (tight, not padded)

July Drafting Schedule

• Week 1: Choose your best topic, create detailed outline
• Week 2: Write first draft — get words on paper without editing. Aim for 700-800 words (you'll cut later)
• Week 3: Self-edit for content. Ask: Does this reveal who I am? Is it specific? Is there growth?
• Week 4: Cut to 650 words, tighten language, prepare for August feedback

What Makes a Strong Essay

• Authenticity: YOUR voice, not how you think you "should" sound
• Specificity: Details only you could write
• Reflection: What you learned, how you grew
• Character: Reader understands something important about who you are

What to Avoid

• Writing about someone else (it's YOUR essay!)
• Overly broad topics without details
• Trauma for shock value without insight
• Clichés and overused topics
• Last-minute rushes
