Overview
CSS Profile is a second financial aid form required by 200+ colleges. While FAFSA determines federal aid, CSS Profile determines institutional aid (money colleges give you directly). Opens October 1 at cssprofile.collegeboard.org. Many ED schools require it.
When CSS Profile Is Required
CSS Profile is typically required by:
- Top 50 colleges (most)
- Private colleges with large endowments
- Schools promising to meet 100% of demonstrated need
Check each school's financial aid page to confirm if required.
Schools that require CSS Profile examples:
- Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford
- MIT, Caltech, Northwestern
- Duke, Cornell, Brown, UPenn
- Many others—check school websites

Critical difference from FAFSA: CSS Profile asks about home equity (value of your home minus mortgage balance)—this is counted as parent asset.

- 529 and education savings plans
- Stocks, bonds, mutual funds (NOT retirement accounts like 401k)

- Investment real estate
- Primary home value (only for CSS Profile, not FAFSA)
- Home equity line of credit debt

Pro Tips
- CSS Profile is NOT the same as FAFSA: It's asking a LOT more detail about finances; be thorough and honest
- Home equity matters: CSS Profile COUNTS your home value (FAFSA doesn't); this significantly affects institutional aid calculations
- Have docs ready: Unlike FAFSA's Data Retrieval Tool, CSS Profile requires you to submit actual documents through IDOC; start gathering now
