Step-by-Step Guide

Overview

Financial aid documents submit separately from the application in most cases. Verify FAFSA, CSS Profile, and any institutional forms have reached each school.

What to Verify

FAFSA

  • Login to studentaid.gov
  • Check that FAFSA was submitted and signed by both student and parent
  • Confirm Schools of Choice list includes every college you applied to
  • If you added schools after initial submission, verify updates processed (24-72 hours)

CSS Profile

  • Login to cssprofile.collegeboard.org
  • Each school must be individually added and paid for
  • Some schools require non-custodial parent CSS Profile too - check each school's requirements

Institutional Aid Forms

Some schools require their own financial aid forms:

  • Harvard: Harvard Financial Aid Initiative form
  • Yale: Yale Financial Aid application
  • Stanford: CSS Profile + IDOC
  • MIT: CSS Profile + IDOC
  • Princeton: Princeton Financial Aid Application

IDOC

The College Board's Institutional Documentation Service (IDOC) collects tax transcripts and additional forms. Upload requested documents:

  • W-2s
  • 1099s (if applicable)
  • Tax return transcripts from IRS (not self-prepared copies, in most cases)
  • Verification forms

Timeline Expectations

  • Schools confirm receipt of FAFSA within 5-7 business days
  • CSS Profile confirmation within 3-5 business days
  • IDOC documents: 3-5 business days after upload
  • Institutional forms: check each school's portal

If Documents Are Missing

  1. Confirm submission on the source platform (FAFSA/CSS Profile portal)
  2. Email the financial aid office (NOT admissions) with your application ID
  3. Ask specifically which document is missing and the preferred method to resubmit

Deadlines Matter for Aid

Missing a financial aid deadline doesn't always disqualify you, but it can:

  • Push you to the back of the aid allocation queue
  • Disqualify you from some institutional grants (which are first-come-first-served)
  • Cost you Cal Grant consideration if Cal Grant GPA wasn't submitted

Common Issues

  • FAFSA submitted but school code missing - add the school code via studentaid.gov (24-72 hrs to process)
  • Non-custodial parent refuses to complete CSS Profile - request a waiver from the school's financial aid office (provide documentation of estrangement)
  • Tax documents not yet available - submit what you have with a note explaining timing

Keep Every Receipt

Save every confirmation email. Financial aid offices occasionally lose documents, and proof of submission protects you.
