Cancer for College Scholarship

Offered by Cancer for College · Free to apply

Cancer for College has funded more than 2,000 scholarships for cancer survivors since 1993 and awards over 100 a year, most of them $5,000, with a few specialty awards that pay more. Applicants must have been diagnosed with cancer themselves; children of survivors do not qualify. Family adjusted gross income must be $150,000 or less. Graduating high school seniors and current college students can apply to attend an accredited US college, university, trade school or certificate program full time, and there is no age limit or citizenship requirement, as long as the school is in the US. One application considers each student for every scholarship they qualify for, including regional awards for the Carolinas, the Midwest, Florida, Southern California and the Pacific Northwest. Families submit the first two pages of the most recent tax return, transcripts from the last two years and a letter from a doctor or nurse confirming the diagnosis; a recommendation is optional. The application opens November 1 and closes January 31, and recipients may reapply each year.

What drives the odds here

Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.

  • More rivalsOpen nationwide, so the field is large
  • Fewer rivalsAn official transcript is required
  • Fewer rivalsAn income ceiling applies
  • More rivalsA five-figure award attracts a bigger field

How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
