Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative runs the largest of the south central Texas co-op scholarship programmes, awarding twenty scholarships of twenty-five hundred dollars each year, fifty thousand dollars in total, to graduating seniors across a service area of thirty-one high schools in thirteen counties around Gonzales, Seguin and Schertz. There are two separate tracks, one for two-year and four-year colleges and one for trade schools, both counting toward the same twenty awards. The money works as tuition reimbursement, released in two payments once enrollment and paid tuition are shown. GVEC is also one of the few sponsors anywhere that publishes its applicant volume, which makes the odds here honest: roughly one winner for every eleven or twelve applicants.
