All seven of Maine's community colleges are tuition-free for residents who enroll soon after finishing high school, with no income limit and no essay. The award is last-dollar, so federal and state grants apply first and the state covers whatever tuition is left, which means the FAFSA still has to be filed even by families who expect no need-based aid. Eligibility runs by graduating class: a diploma, GED, or HiSET earned in recent years, Maine residency for the full year before enrolling and while enrolled, and a start inside the enroll-by term published for that class. There is no scholarship form. Apply for admission to one of the colleges and file the FAFSA by Maine's May 1 filing date, listing that college. Part-time enrollment counts, and coverage lasts up to 150% of normal program length.
