Modern Woodmen High School Senior Scholarship

Offered by Modern Woodmen of America · Free to apply

Modern Woodmen of America, a fraternal life insurer, runs a scholarship competition each year open only to member students who are graduating high school seniors. It awards 198 scholarships, 33 in each of six regions drawn so that each has about the same number of eligible students. Track 1, for volunteer service plus academics with a 3.5 minimum GPA, pays twelve each of $10,000, $7,500, $5,000 and $2,500 awards. Track 2, for volunteer service with a 2.5 minimum GPA, pays 150 awards of $1,000. To qualify the student must have been covered by a Modern Woodmen life insurance certificate or annuity for at least one year as of January 1 of the award year, keep it in force through the August payment, have at least 40 hours of volunteer work in the past two years, and plan to attend a two- or four-year college or a trade or technical school that fall. The application, run by Scholarship America, includes an essay on the impact of the student's volunteering and a full transcript. It opens November 1 and is due the first Monday in February.

What drives the odds here

Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.

  • More rivalsOpen nationwide, so the field is large
  • Fewer rivalsAn essay is required, which filters out casual applicants
  • Fewer rivalsAn official transcript is required
  • Fewer rivalsOpen to a single grade level only
  • Fewer rivalsRequires at least a 2.5 GPA
  • More rivalsA five-figure award attracts a bigger field

How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
