How hard is it to win the National Merit Scholarship?

NMSC's own numbers for the competition entered in October 2026: about 1.3 million entrants are screened to 50,000 high scorers, of whom about 34,000 become Commended Students and more than 16,000 become semifinalists, under 1% of the nation's graduating seniors. About 95% of semifinalists (over 15,000) advance to finalist, and roughly half of finalists win: some 6,700 National Merit Scholarships will be awarded in 2028, plus about 620 corporate Special Scholarships, 7,320 awards worth over $30 million combined. Net odds are about one winner per 200 entrants, but the decisive cut is the first one: clearing your state's semifinalist Selection Index cutoff on a single October morning of testing.

Commended Student vs Semifinalist vs Finalist: what is the difference?

All 50,000 high scorers earn recognition, but only one lane leads to a National Merit Scholarship. Commended Students, about 34,000 of them, are named on a single nationally applied Selection Index cutoff; they are out of the running for National Merit Scholarships, though some become candidates for corporate sponsored Special Scholarships and are contacted in November. Semifinalists, more than 16,000, are the highest scorers within each state, and only they can advance. Finalists are semifinalists who clear the application requirements: about 95% do, and receive a Certificate of Merit. The wrinkle families miss is that the commended cutoff is national while semifinalist cutoffs are set state by state, so geography helps decide which letter your student gets.

How do the state Selection Index cutoffs work, and why are they not published in advance?

Because a cutoff cannot exist until the scores do. NMSC allocates semifinalist slots to each state by its share of the nation's graduating seniors (a state with about 2% of seniors gets about 320 of the 16,000 slots), then sorts that state's entrants by Selection Index in descending order; the score where the allocation fills becomes that state's qualifying score. Cutoffs therefore vary by state and by year, and any site listing next year's cutoffs is extrapolating, not reporting. The index itself comes from your PSAT/NMSQT section scores: double Reading and Writing, add Math, divide by ten, for a range of 48 to 228. Boarding schools with national enrollment get their own selection unit, as do DC, the territories, and U.S. citizens at schools abroad.

How much is the National Merit Scholarship worth?

It depends which of the three types you win, and no student can take more than one monetary award from NMSC. The classic National Merit $2500 Scholarship is a one time payment of $2,500: there are 2,500 of them, every finalist is considered, and winners are named state by state. Corporate sponsored awards, about 700, range from one time payments of $2,500 to $10,000 up to renewable awards of $1,000 to $10,000 per year, usually reserved for employees' children or specific communities. College sponsored awards are the largest pool, about 3,500 expected, renewable for four years at $500 to $2,000 per year, but only at a sponsor college you named to NMSC as your first choice, and canceled if you enroll anywhere else. All 7,320 awards together are worth over $30 million.

What do National Merit semifinalists have to do to become finalists?

Five things, none optional: complete the National Merit Scholarship Application, which includes writing an essay; be fully endorsed for finalist standing and recommended by the high school principal; show consistently very high academic performance in every year of grades 9 through 12, with the school submitting the full course and grade record plus its grading system; take the SAT or ACT and earn scores that confirm the PSAT/NMSQT performance that made you a semifinalist; and still meet all entry requirements while enrolled in the final year of high school. NMSC does not publish the confirming score threshold, so treat that SAT or ACT sitting seriously rather than as a formality. The comfort: about 95% of semifinalists, over 15,000 students, advance to finalist standing in February.

When do National Merit semifinalists, finalists, and winners find out?

The competition entered with the October 2026 PSAT/NMSQT runs about 18 months. April 2027: NMSC sends its high scorer lists to principals for eligibility checks. Early September 2027: semifinalists are notified through their schools, with names released to media in mid September. Late September 2027: Commended Students receive their letters, also through the school. November 2027: corporate Special Scholarship candidates get application materials. February 2028: finalist standing is announced. Offers then stagger by type: corporate awards from early March, the $2,500 awards from late March, college sponsored awards from early May, with winners' names released April through July. Notice the pattern: at every recognition stage NMSC works through the high school, not the student's inbox.

Can you enter the National Merit program without the PSAT, or as a sophomore?

The only test that counts is the PSAT/NMSQT taken in your third year of grades 9 through 12; the PSAT 10 and PSAT 8/9 are explicitly excluded. A sophomore who takes the October 2026 test on a four year track does not enter the 2028 program and must retake as a junior in 2027. Two escape hatches exist in NMSC's own rules. Students who miss the test because of illness, an emergency, or another extenuating circumstance can request an alternate route of entry by writing to NMSC, received or postmarked by April 1, 2027. And a student who feels the sitting went badly can ask NMSC to withhold that score from the competition within five days of the test date. The 2026 testing window runs October 1 to 30, so a missed date can often simply be rescheduled first.
