Named for Commerce Secretary Ron Brown, this program is one of the most selective national scholarships for Black high school seniors. Its mission is to find and develop future leaders, not simply to reward top grades. The program made its first awards in 1996 and has since named more than 650 Ron Brown Scholars, who graduate at a reported rate of 99 percent. Selection is guided by the four pillars of Ronald H. Brown's own mission: public service, community engagement, business entrepreneurship, and global citizenship. Twenty or so Black high school seniors a year receive $10,000 annually for four years, $40,000 in total, usable for any major at any accredited four-year college in the United States, plus a lifelong alumni network. Significant financial need, academic strength, leadership, and sustained community service drive the selection, and current college students may not apply. The application asks for essays, two recommendations, and a transcript, with letters and transcripts arriving on their own schedule shortly after the student submits. Applications open August 1; an optional November 1 early date lets the fund share the application with partner scholarship programs, and the final date is January 9. Finalists are notified in early March and flown to Washington for interviews, and the scholar list is posted in early May.
