SchoolHouse Connection Youth Leadership and Scholarship Program
Offered by SchoolHouse Connection · Free to apply
SchoolHouse Connection runs one of the only national scholarship programs just for students who have experienced homelessness. Scholars receive a $2,500 scholarship, monthly stipends of up to $100 throughout college, one-on-one case management, peer support and three all-expenses-paid trips, including a policy advocacy trip to Washington, DC. Applicants must live in the US (undocumented students are eligible), have experienced homelessness in the last six years, meaning they lacked a fixed, regular and adequate place to sleep, and be starting college, community college or trade school for the first time. Because support begins a year before college, the 2027 cycle is for students starting in 2028-29: mainly high school juniors, plus seniors planning a gap year and GED students. The application asks for a transcript, an essay of up to 1,000 words on the student's experience of homelessness, why college matters and what support they need, and a recommendation letter. Grammar is not a scoring priority.

What drives the odds here
Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.
- More rivalsOpen nationwide, so the field is large
- Fewer rivalsA long essay is required, and most browsers never finish one
- Fewer rivalsRecommendation letters are required, a step many applicants skip
- Fewer rivalsAn official transcript is required
- Fewer rivalsRequires a specific life circumstance
How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
