SME Education Foundation Scholarships
Offered by SME Education Foundation · Free to apply
The SME Education Foundation, the charity of the manufacturing engineering society SME, awards scholarships each year to graduating high school seniors and current college students pursuing an associate or bachelor's degree in technical fields that support manufacturing, such as manufacturing, mechanical or industrial engineering, engineering technology, machining and robotics. More than 60 separate scholarship funds are matched through one application, so a student fills it out once and is considered for every award they fit. Awards range from $2,500 to $20,000, and some renew. The foundation gave more than 250 scholarships in 2026. Some awards are merit based and some are need based, and the foundation encourages applications from young women and students from underrepresented communities. The application is open each year from November 1 to February 1. For seniors this lines up with the college application season, so a student interested in making things should apply while finishing college applications.

How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
