Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision
Offered by Toshiba and the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) · Free to apply
ExploraVision is a team science competition run by Toshiba and the National Science Teaching Association for students in kindergarten through grade 12. Teams of two to four students, guided by a teacher or coach, pick a current technology and imagine how it could work 10 or more years from now, then write it up with an abstract, a project description of up to 11 pages, a bibliography and mock web pages. High school students in grades 10 to 12 compete in their own category, and ninth graders compete in the middle level category. Each student on the four first prize teams chooses a $10,000 Series EE savings bond at maturity, $5,000 in cash, or a $5,000 contribution to a 529 plan. Second prize team members choose a $5,000 bond, $2,500 cash, or a $2,500 529 contribution. National finalists also get a trip to Washington, DC. The coach submits the project online. To receive prizes, all team members must be US or Canadian citizens.

What drives the odds here
Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.
- More rivalsOpen nationwide, so the field is large
- Fewer rivalsAn essay is required, which filters out casual applicants
- Fewer rivalsRestricted to specific intended majors
How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
