Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG)
Offered by State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) · Free to apply
The Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant is the state's grant for Virginia residents who choose a private nonprofit college or university in Virginia. It is not based on financial need or grades: any Virginia domiciliary enrolled full time in a degree program at an eligible private institution can receive it, which makes it one of the broadest awards in the state. The General Assembly sets the amount each year; participating colleges estimate $5,250 for in-person undergraduates in 2026-27 and $2,625 for students in online programs, and the grant renews each year the student stays enrolled full time. There is no state application: the student files the one-page VTAG form with the college's financial aid office. Forms received by September 15 are funded first; applications received after that date and no later than December 1 are considered only if money remains, so the September date is the one to plan around. The grant is paid through the college and shows up on the bill as a reduction in tuition.

What drives the odds here
Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.
- Fewer rivalsOpen only to Virginia residents
- Fewer rivalsOpen to a single grade level only
How Solyo estimates this: State programs that allocate by published formula are modelled on qualification and filing, not on competition, because there is no selection committee choosing between applicants. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
