AP English Literature has 55 multiple-choice questions carrying 45% of the exam, about 0.82% per question, and three essays carrying 55%. The essays are poetry analysis, prose fiction analysis and an open literary argument on a work you choose, each scored 0 to 6 on the same rubric as AP Lang: thesis (1 point), evidence and commentary (up to 4), sophistication (1).
Each essay point is worth about 3% of your score, so a single essay moving from 3 to 4 outweighs missing three multiple-choice questions. The multiple choice runs five passages with roughly eleven questions each, and unlike the essays, it is pure close reading under time pressure.
Our estimated cutoffs put a 5 at roughly 73% of the composite, a 4 near 60% and a 3 near 47%. A student with 46 of 55 multiple choice and essays of 5, 4 and 4 is safely in 5 territory; straight 4 essays need about 45 of 55 multiple choice to stay there.
In 2026, 16% of students earned a 5, 26% a 4 and 31% a 3, a 73% pass rate. Cutoffs are estimates and the calculator flags borderline composites, since College Board re-equates the conversion every year.
The literary argument essay names a theme and asks you to develop it through any work of literary merit you choose. Students who walk in with three or four works they know deeply, a novel, a play, something with structural ambition, can adapt one to almost any prompt. Students who choose in the moment routinely write plot summary, which caps the evidence score.
Know each prepared work well enough to quote structure rather than lines: how it opens, where it turns, what the ending withholds. The sophistication point on this essay usually goes to an argument about how the work is built, not what happens in it.

Each of the three essays is scored 0 to 6 and the trio carries 55% of the exam, about 3% per rubric point. One essay point is worth roughly three and a half multiple-choice questions.
Three or four works of recognized literary merit that you know structurally, not just by plot. Novels and plays with thematic range travel well across prompts. The rubric rewards argument about how the work is built, so depth on few works beats familiarity with many.
They are different courses, not levels of one course: Lang is nonfiction rhetoric, Lit is fiction and poetry. Colleges treat them as two separate English APs, and taking both signals sustained rigor. In 2026 their results were nearly identical, with 73% passing Lit and 75% passing Lang.
Only if you report them. AP scores are self-reported on applications and sent officially only to the college you designate. A strong score supports your application; a weak one can simply be left off. Either way, the course itself and the grade you earned in it appear on your transcript and feed your weighted GPA.
