Section weights are College Board’s. The 1-5 cutoffs are our estimates; the real conversion is set after each exam and is never published.

Structure transcribed from College Board’s AP World History: Modern exam page. 5 written questions in total. The “value per point” column is the number this page exists to show: it is where preparation time pays unevenly.
AP World History: Modern uses the same structure as APUSH: 55 multiple-choice questions at 40% of the exam, three short-answer questions at 20%, a seven-point Document-Based Question at 25%, and a six-point Long Essay at 15%. Each DBQ point is worth about 3.6% of your score, each SAQ point 2.2%, each multiple-choice answer 0.7%.
The DBQ checklist is identical to APUSH: thesis, contextualization, document use, outside evidence, sourcing and complexity. Students who practice the checklist until the first four points are automatic routinely outscore students who know more history but write unstructured essays.
The AP World conversion has historically been the most forgiving of the history exams. Our estimated cutoffs: a 5 at roughly 66% of the composite, a 4 near 53%, a 3 near 41%. That means 40 of 55 multiple choice with a 6 SAQ, 5 DBQ and 4 LEQ is already 5 territory, a noticeably lower bar than the same profile faces on APUSH.
The cutoffs are estimates. College Board re-equates every year, and this calculator flags any composite within three points of a cutoff as borderline.
The 2026 distribution is unusual: 14% earned a 5 and 36% a 4, but 26% earned a 2, the largest 2-group among the twelve subjects on this calculator. AP World is the first AP course for many sophomores, and the essay sections punish inexperience with rubric writing more than they punish gaps in content.
The practical takeaway if you are aiming to move from a 2 to a 3: the estimated gap is about 12 composite points, and the cheapest 12 points are the DBQ checklist items and SAQ completeness, not additional multiple-choice review. Overall, 66% of 2026 students scored 3 or higher.
About 66% of the weighted composite by our estimate, the lowest 5 cutoff among the AP history exams. For example, 40 of 55 multiple choice with 6 of 9 SAQ points, a 5 of 7 DBQ and a 4 of 6 LEQ reaches it. Cutoffs are estimates; College Board does not publish them.
Their structures are identical, but AP World covers 800 years of global history at lower depth while APUSH covers American history in more detail. In 2026, 74% passed APUSH against 66% for AP World, though AP World skews younger since many students take it as their first AP.
Seven rubric points carrying 25% of the exam, about 3.6% per point. The thesis, contextualization and document-use points are checklist points that disciplined practice makes nearly automatic.
In 2026, 14% of students earned a 5, 36% a 4, 16% a 3, 26% a 2 and 8% a 1. The unusually large 2-group is mostly first-time AP students losing rubric points on the written sections.
Only if you report them. AP scores are self-reported on applications and sent officially only to the college you designate. A strong score supports your application; a weak one can simply be left off. Either way, the course itself and the grade you earned in it appear on your transcript and feed your weighted GPA.
