How the AP Human Geography exam is scored

AP Human Geography splits evenly: 60 multiple-choice questions carry 50% of the exam, about 0.83% per question, and three free-response questions carry the other 50%. Each FRQ is worth 7 points, one point per lettered part A through G, making each part worth about 2.4% of your score. The second FRQ includes data or an image, the third includes two sources.

The one-point-per-part structure means there is no partial credit within a part: each part is a single scored claim. Answering all seven parts of all three questions with one precise sentence each beats writing paragraphs on five parts and skipping two.

What do you need for a 5 on AP Human Geography?

Our estimated cutoffs: a 5 at roughly 68% of the composite, a 4 near 55%, a 3 near 41%. A 5 profile looks like 45 of 60 multiple choice with 15 of 21 FRQ points. In 2026, 19% of students earned a 5 and 26% a 4.

The distribution has a wide base: 24% of students earned a 2 and 10% a 1. AP Human Geography is the most common ninth-grade AP in the country, and first-time AP students lose FRQ points to vague verbs more than to missing content. The calculator flags borderline composites, since the real conversion shifts year to year.

The verbs are the rubric

Every FRQ part opens with a task verb, and the graders score the verb: identify wants a term, describe wants a sentence of characteristics, explain wants a because, compare wants both sides named. A correct concept attached to the wrong verb earns nothing, which is where ninth graders bleed points.

The reliable drill is rewriting practice answers to lead with the verb's demand: "One reason is... because...". Students who master the verb discipline commonly gain three or four FRQ points, close to 10% of the exam, without learning any new geography.

AP Human Geography score questions, answered

What percent is a 5 on AP Human Geography?

About 68% of the weighted composite by our estimate: for example, 45 of 60 multiple choice with 15 of 21 FRQ points. College Board does not publish official cutoffs, and they shift a few points each year.

How are AP Human Geography FRQs graded?

Three questions, seven points each, one point per lettered part. Each part is scored on whether your sentence does what its task verb demands: identify, describe, explain or compare. There is no partial credit within a part.

Is AP Human Geography good for freshmen?

It is the most common ninth-grade AP in the country and a reasonable introduction to AP pacing. Be clear-eyed about the exam: in 2026, 34% of students scored a 1 or 2, mostly on free-response technique, so FRQ verb practice matters as much as the content.

What was the AP Human Geography score distribution in 2026?

In 2026, 19% of students earned a 5, 26% a 4, 21% a 3, 24% a 2 and 10% a 1, a 66% pass rate. The strong showing at both ends reflects a course taken by ninth graders and seniors alike.

Do colleges see my AP scores?

Only if you report them. AP scores are self-reported on applications and sent officially only to the college you designate. A strong score supports your application; a weak one can simply be left off. Either way, the course itself and the grade you earned in it appear on your transcript and feed your weighted GPA.
