PSAT 2026 Parent Guide: Dates, Scores, and National Merit

Sometime between October 1 and October 30, your teenager will walk into a classroom, open a school device, and take the PSAT/NMSQT. For sophomores it is a low-stakes rehearsal. For juniors it is the one and only test that opens the door to National Merit scholarship money, and most families learn their school's test date from an email that is easy to miss.

What Is the PSAT/NMSQT and When Is It in 2026?

The PSAT/NMSQT is a digital practice version of the SAT that students take at school once a year. According to the College Board's official calendar, the fall 2026 testing window runs October 1 through October 30, and each school chooses its own test day inside that window. Two schools in the same district can test a week apart.

Registration also runs through the school, not through a College Board account. That makes your first move simple: ask the counselor which day your school is testing and confirm your child is on the list. If the school does not offer the PSAT at all, ask now whether a nearby school accepts outside students.

The scale needs one word of translation: a perfect PSAT is 1520, not 1600. College Board's score explainer confirms the total runs 320-1520, with Reading and Writing and Math each scored 160-760, because the PSAT leaves out the hardest end of SAT content.

How National Merit Actually Works

The National Merit Scholarship Program is why the junior-year PSAT carries real stakes. This October's test is the qualifying test for the 2028 National Merit Scholarship Program, the competition your current junior finishes as a senior. Per the National Merit Scholarship Corporation's own outline of the competition, the funnel looks like this:

1. About 1.2 million juniors meet the requirements to enter the program each year
2. Around 50,000 of the highest scorers earn program recognition
3. More than 16,000 become Semifinalists, less than 1 percent of the nation's graduating seniors, allocated state by state and announced in the fall of senior year
4. About 95 percent of Semifinalists advance to Finalist standing
5. Roughly half of Finalists win a Merit Scholarship and the Merit Scholar title

The Selection Index: the number that decides it

NMSC does not screen on the 320-1520 total. It uses the Selection Index, which the College Board explains is calculated by doubling the Reading and Writing score, adding the Math score, and dividing by 10, on a scale of 48-228. Reading and Writing literally counts double, so a verbally strong student can out-index a higher-total classmate.

Two Octobers ago, my son came home with a sophomore PSAT score strong enough that we quietly assumed National Merit was settled. It was not. Sophomore scores do not enter the competition at all, which I learned that spring from a counselor newsletter I nearly deleted. His junior sitting last fall was the one that counted, and we treated the practice test beforehand very differently because of it.

When PSAT Scores Come Out and How They Arrive

College Board's fall 2026 in-school score calendar shows that tests submitted by October 23 release scores to students on November 5, 2026; schools testing at the very end of the window release later. Students see scores through the BigFuture School mobile app if they opted in, or through a score report the school distributes, so do not expect an email from College Board itself.

The test itself has been fully digital since 2024, taken in the Bluebook app with a built-in timer and calculator. When College Board completed that transition, its assessment lead framed the goal in terms parents will recognize:

How to Prepare Without Turning October Into Boot Camp

For most students, heavy PSAT prep is a poor trade. It is a practice test, and the score report itself is the product. A light plan beats a bootcamp:

• One full-length practice test in the Bluebook app, which includes official full-length digital practice tests, taken on a quiet September Saturday
• Review the two or three weakest areas using the free Official Digital SAT Prep on Khan Academy, which covers the same skills
• Protect sleep the week of the test, which moves scores more reliably than cramming

What the Score Means for Your Family

For a sophomore, the number is a baseline and nothing more. For a junior, it is the best early read on SAT readiness while there is still time to act: the spring SAT calendar opens March 6, 2027, with additional dates in May and June, so a November score report leaves a full runway to prep and test before senior fall.

If the score lands in National Merit range, resist the urge to chase cutoff rumors online. Semifinalist thresholds vary by state and by year, and NMSC notifies through the school in the fall of senior year. A Parent's PSAT Checklist for the Next Nine Weeks

1. This week: email the counselor two questions: which day in the October 1-30 window is our school testing, and is my child registered
2. September: one full-length Bluebook practice test, then a short review plan for the weakest areas
3. Test week: normal routines, real breakfast, charged device if the school uses student-owned hardware
4. Early November: sit down together with the score report, look at both section scores and the Selection Index
5. Same week: decide the spring plan: SAT date, ACT date, or no test at all, depending on the colleges in play
