Asking for recommendation letters is a big step! Here's how to do it thoughtfully and professionally.

Who to Ask

Choose 2 teachers in core academic subjects who:

• Know you well beyond just your grades
• Have taught you recently (junior year is ideal)
• Can speak to your intellectual curiosity and character
• Ideally: one STEM, one Humanities for balance

How to Ask (In Person)

1. Schedule a private moment - not during class
2. Use language like: "I really valued learning in your class because [specific reason]. I'm applying to college next fall and wanted to ask if you would be willing to write a strong letter of recommendation for me?"
3. Watch their reaction - enthusiasm is good; hesitation means find someone else
4. If they agree, ask about their preferred process

After They Agree

• Follow up with an email confirming
• Attach your brag sheet with all supporting materials
• Include your college list and deadlines
• Express genuine gratitude
