Research QuestBridge National College Match

Overview

QuestBridge is a life-changing program for high-achieving students from low-income families. Through the National College Match, eligible seniors rank partner colleges, and matched students receive full 4-year scholarships covering tuition, room, board, books, and travel - usually zero loans. In 2024, over 2,100 students matched.

Are You Eligible?

QuestBridge targets students who show both academic excellence and significant financial need:

• Typical family income under $65,000 for a family of four (can be higher with complicating factors)
• Top 5-10% of graduating class preferred
• Strong standardized test scores (SAT 1310+, ACT 28+) preferred but not absolute
• First-generation college status is a plus but not required

Why Apply Junior Year?

The College Prep Scholars program (applied to as a junior) offers:

• Summer scholarship to a QuestBridge partner's pre-college program (RSI-level programs like Stanford SIMR, Duke TIP, Notre Dame Pre-College)
• $1,000 College Prep Scholar award
• Priority consideration for National College Match as a senior
• Access to College Visits, QuestBridge Conferences

College Prep Scholars deadline: ~late March of junior year.

Senior Year: National College Match

• Application opens late summer, due ~September 26
• Rank up to 15 partner colleges
• 4 essays + recommendations + transcripts + financial documents
• If matched, you are admitted Early Decision (binding) with full-ride scholarship
• If not matched but a school is interested, you may still be admitted Regular Decision

Partner Colleges (as of 2025)

All Ivies except Cornell, plus: Stanford, MIT, Caltech, Notre Dame, Duke, Emory, Amherst, Williams, Swarthmore, Pomona, Georgetown, Rice, Vanderbilt, USC, UChicago, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, and 25+ others.

Strategic Considerations

• Match is binding. Only rank schools you would genuinely attend.
• Ranking affects outcomes: ranking 12 schools doesn't mean you'll match to the 12th; match is based on each school's independent decision
• You can still apply Regular Decision to schools you matched with but didn't get into
• QuestBridge students admitted Regular Decision often receive top financial aid anyway

Parallel Steps for Juniors

• Apply for College Prep Scholars: ~late March
• Attend QuestBridge regional events (often free, including transportation)
• Read winning essays at questbridge.org
• Keep grades high - QuestBridge expects straight As in rigorous courses

If You're Close But Not a Perfect Fit

Many colleges have their own need-based programs that mirror QuestBridge benefits:

• Stanford SCA: families under $150K often pay zero tuition
• Harvard: families under $100K pay nothing
• Princeton: families under $100K pay nothing; now also no-loan for all students
• Apply regular admissions - most of these schools meet 100% of demonstrated need without loans

Don't Let Shame Stop You

If your family qualifies financially, apply. Elite colleges want socioeconomic diversity and will match substantial aid. QuestBridge is one of the highest-leverage programs in American higher education.
