Research Framework for "Why Us?" Essays
Step 1: Deep Dive Research (per school: 1-2 hours)
- Academic programs: Major-specific strengths, renowned professors, research opportunities
- Location factors: How does city/region matter to you? Internship opportunities?
- Student life: Student organizations, residential life, traditions unique to school
- Opportunities specific to YOU: Clubs you'd join, research mentors, study abroad programs in your interest area
Step 2: Gather Specific Details
Create research document for each school:

Opening (1-2 sentences):
Hook with specific detail about school, NOT generic praise

Body (2-3 paragraphs):

- Paragraph 3 (if space): Personal connection or unique contribution you'd bring
Closing (1-2 sentences):
Strong ending connecting your goals to school's mission/community

Common "Why Us?" Mistakes
- Generic: Could work for 10+ schools (don't personalize)
- All positives, no specifics: "Great school, great people, great opportunities"
- Recycled: Same essay for multiple schools
- All ranking/reputation: Only mentions what you already knew from rankings
- Too focused on you, not school: "I want to grow" without saying how school enables it
- Attendance assumption: "When I attend" instead of "If admitted, I would"
