Step-by-Step Guide

Overview

If you haven't taken the SAT yet, September might be your last opportunity before ED/EA deadlines. October SAT results arrive too late for November 1 ED/EA submission. This task covers last-minute SAT strategy.

SAT Timeline 2026-2027

| Date | Score Arrival | For Which Apps | Notes | |------|---|---|---| | August 2026 | Mid-August | ED/EA/RD (all) | Summer sitting | | September 2026 | Mid-October | ED/EA borderline | Scores arrive after Oct 1 app open | | October 2026 | Late October | ED/EA risky | Scores may arrive after Nov 1 deadline | | November 2026 | Early Dec | RD only | Too late for ED/EA | | December 2026 | ~Jan 5 | RD/ED2 | December 5 test date | | March 2027 | April | RD | Latest useful test date |

Should You Retake SAT in September?

Take September SAT If:

✓ You haven't tested yet and want ED/EA option ✓ Your August score was 50+ points below your goal ✓ You have a clear study plan and realistic goal score ✓ You're comfortable with test-optional or current score backup plan

Skip September SAT If:

✗ Your August score is solid (above 50th percentile of schools) ✗ You're applying test-optional (don't retake just to submit) ✗ You don't have time to study meaningfully (studying doesn't help if rushed) ✗ Stress of retake + app season is too much

September SAT Registration & Deadlines

College Board SAT website: collegeboard.org

Register ASAP (by September 3 at latest)

  • Registration deadline: typically 6 days before test
  • September 2026 test date: register by September 6 (early September can be cutoff)
  • Late registration fee: +$30 after deadline
  • Standard fee: $68

Test Date Selection

  • September 14, 2026 is likely date (check collegeboard.org for exact dates)
  • Saturday 8am or Sunday 1pm option
  • Choose based on your typical test performance (are you a morning or afternoon person?)

Score Reporting Strategy for ED/EA

If September Score Arrives by October 15

  • Scores available through College Board portal by Oct 15
  • Can send to ED/EA schools Oct 16-31
  • Arrives in time for Nov 1 deadline (typically)
  • Send to all ED/EA schools immediately upon receiving score

If September Score Arrives After October 25

  • Risky for ED/EA; scores may not arrive by Nov 1
  • Consider sending current August score instead (if available)
  • Or focus on RD deadline (Jan 15) where Dec test would be better anyway

Score Reporting Plan

In Solyo Dashboard, document:

  • [ ] September test date registered
  • [ ] Expected score arrival date
  • [ ] List of schools to send scores to
  • [ ] Backup plan if scores arrive late

Last-Minute SAT Study Strategy (for September retake)

If You Have 4 Weeks (Aug 15 - Sept 14)

Week 1-2: Diagnostic

  • Take full practice test (3 hours)
  • Score and analyze mistakes by section
  • Identify weakness: reading, writing, math, timing?

Week 2-3: Targeted Study

  • Focus only on weakness (don't re-study strengths)
  • 1-2 hours/day on targeted practice
  • Use Khan Academy + College Board official practice

Week 4: Full Practice Tests

  • Take 2 full practice tests under real conditions
  • Time yourself; simulate test day
  • Review mistakes immediately after

If You Have 2 Weeks (Sept 1-14)

  • Focus on high-impact improvements only
  • Review top 5 mistakes from previous test
  • Take 1 full practice test
  • Spend remaining time on pacing/timing

If You Have 1 Week (Sept 7-14)

  • Don't panic study: More studying doesn't help at this point
  • Review test-taking strategies (timing, elimination)
  • Take one practice test to stay sharp
  • Rest and confidence-building the final 2 days

Score Reporting Logistics

Send Scores to Colleges

  • College Board charges $12 per school for score reporting ($13 for rush)
  • Or use "free score sends" with Common App (up to 4 free)
  • Send to ED school first (if applicable)
  • Then EA schools
  • Then RD schools

Free vs. Paid Score Sends

Free:

  • 4 free score sends when you register for SAT
  • Additional sends cost $12
  • Plan which 4 schools get free sends (typically: ED school + 3 reach schools)

Paid:

  • $12 per additional school
  • $13 for rush delivery (arrives in 1-2 days vs. 3-5 days)
  • Worth it if score arriving day before deadline

Create Score Tracking List

Document in Solyo Dashboard:

| School | Deadline | Score Sent Date | Arrived Date | Status | |---|---|---|---|---| | [ED School] | Nov 1 | Oct 16 | Oct 18 | ✓ Received | | [EA School 1] | Nov 1 | Oct 16 | Oct 19 | ✓ Received | | [RD School 1] | Jan 15 | Oct 25 | Oct 28 | Pending |

Test-Optional Strategy with September SAT

If your August score was solid but not amazing:

  • September retake might hurt if you score lower
  • Consider: "Is 50 point improvement realistic in 3 weeks?"
  • If yes: retake
  • If no: submit August score or go test-optional

Key Deadlines

  • September 3: Register for September SAT if interested
  • September 14: Take September SAT (or your test date)
  • October 15: Scores typically available
  • October 25: Final day to send scores for reasonable Nov 1 arrival
  • October 31: FINAL day to send scores for ED/EA deadline (rush delivery needed)

Pro Tips

  1. Score reporting paranoia is helpful: Check College Board score recipient list 2x to confirm schools received scores; don't assume
  2. Consider test-optional seriously: If August score is 50th percentile for your schools, retaking probably won't improve enough to matter
  3. Scores are just part of application: Even if September score doesn't arrive in time, strong essays often matter more than one test date
