Step-by-Step Guide

Overview

The final transcript is sent by your high school after graduation to confirm course completion and final grades. Your committed college requires it by early summer.

What's on the Final Transcript

  • All senior-year grades (both semesters)
  • Graduation confirmation
  • GPA (cumulative and weighted if applicable)
  • Courses taken (full list)
  • Any honors or awards
  • Class rank (if applicable)
  • Signature of authorized personnel

Timing

  • Graduation: Early-mid June
  • Transcripts typically ready: Mid-to-late June
  • Deadline to send: Usually July 1 for incoming freshmen
  • Late submission policy varies by school

Who Sends It

  • Your high school registrar's office
  • Not you directly
  • Usually sent to the college's admissions or registrar's office

How It's Sent

  • Electronically (via Parchment, National Student Clearinghouse, or school's platform)
  • Mail (rarer now)
  • Secure email (for some transfer scenarios)

Your Role

  1. Confirm with your high school counselor or registrar that transcript will be sent
  2. Provide correct address/recipient for your committed college
  3. Confirm delivery after graduation
  4. Follow up if not received by July

Check College Portal

After transcript submission:

  • Login to your committed college's portal
  • Verify transcript received
  • Note any missing items

If Transcript Is Late

If committed college hasn't received it by July 15:

  1. Email your high school registrar
  2. Request confirmation of submission
  3. Contact college registrar to check
  4. Resend if necessary

Verification of Graduation

Colleges require proof of graduation:

  • Final transcript shows graduation
  • Diploma copy sometimes requested
  • Some colleges require separate graduation verification

What If You Don't Graduate

  • If you fail a class or don't meet requirements: immediate communication
  • Explore options: summer school, delayed graduation
  • Notify college immediately
  • May delay enrollment or require gap year

For Gap Year Students

  • Transcript still sent
  • College defers your enrollment
  • You re-enroll the following year
  • Transcript remains valid

International Students

  • Transcript translation required if not in English
  • Send to credential evaluation service if needed
  • WES, ECE are common evaluators

Homeschool Students

  • Documentation of coursework
  • Transcript from homeschool overseer or portfolio
  • May require additional verification

Transfer Students

  • Send both high school and college transcripts
  • Community college transcript sent by community college
  • Follow each college's transfer policy

Multiple College Attendance

If you attended multiple high schools:

  • Each school may need to send their transcript
  • Or main school consolidates
  • Confirm with your college's requirements

Maintaining a Copy

  • Request an official transcript copy for your records
  • Save a PDF or physical copy
  • Useful for future graduate school or employment

Post-Confirmation

Once college confirms transcript receipt:

  • No further action needed
  • Focus on college prep
  • Don't worry about it

Fees

  • Usually free from high school
  • Small fee ($5-$10) for additional copies
  • Electronic sending usually free

Important Dates

  • Last day of school / graduation
  • Transcript ready date (ask school)
  • College transcript deadline (check portal)
