Step-by-Step Guide

ROTC scholarships

ROTC national scholarships pay full tuition or room and board for four years in exchange for a service commitment after graduation. They are awarded by selection board, and the earliest boards have the most money left.

The 2026-27 deadlines

| Branch | Window | Key date | |---|---|---| | Air Force ROTC | Opens July 1, 2026 | First board September 15, 2026; applications close December 11, 2026 | | Navy / Marine ROTC | Open now | January 31, 2027; the Pre-Med option closes December 31, 2026 | | Army ROTC | Opened June 14, 2026 | Must be started by March 4, 2027 for the final board |

Why the first board matters more than the deadline

Boards meet several times per cycle and award from a shrinking pool. A file complete for the September or October board competes for far more scholarship money than the identical file submitted in February. Treat the first board date as your deadline, not the last one.

What each application needs

  • The online application, per branch
  • Transcript and test scores — ROTC boards do use scores, so submit them even at test-optional colleges
  • A physical fitness assessment
  • An interview with an officer, which you schedule yourself
  • Letters of recommendation
  • A medical examination through DoDMERB after selection

The part families get wrong

An ROTC scholarship is awarded to you, not to a school, and you then take it to a college with a host or affiliated unit. So the college applications still have to happen on the normal timeline, and the college list should be checked against which schools host your branch's unit. A scholarship at a school with no unit is not usable.

The commitment is real

Four years of active duty for most branches and options. Discuss it as a family before the interview, not after selection.
