Waive or accept student health insurance, and send immunization records

The insurance waiver has a hard deadline and you are billed automatically if you miss it — often $2,000 to $4,000 for coverage you may not need.

Health insurance and immunizations

The waiver is a real deadline with a real price

Most colleges enrol every student in the university health plan by default and charge for it. If your family already has coverage that meets the school's standard, you can waive it — but only by filing the waiver before the deadline, usually in July or early August.

Miss it and the charge stays on the bill for the year. It is commonly $2,000 to $4,000, and it is generally not reversible after the deadline.

Before waiving, check that your plan actually works there

A waiver is only sensible if the family plan covers the student where the college is. Confirm:

  • In-network providers near the campus, not only at home
  • Emergency and urgent care coverage in that state
  • Whether the plan covers routine care out of the home area, or only emergencies
  • Prescription coverage at a local pharmacy
  • Mental health coverage, including a local therapist — this is the one families check last and need most

If your student is going out of state on an HMO, the university plan is frequently the better choice even though it costs more. Waiving is not automatically the right answer.

Immunization records

Separate, and equally enforced. Most colleges require a documented record before the student can register for classes — a registration hold is the usual enforcement, and it lands exactly when the good courses fill.

Typically required:

  • MMR, two doses
  • Tdap within the last ten years
  • Meningococcal ACWY, often with a dose after age 16
  • Varicella, two doses or proof of disease
  • Hepatitis B
  • A tuberculosis risk assessment at some schools

Request the full record from your pediatrician now — offices are slow in summer. If a dose is missing or the record is incomplete, book the appointment this month.

While you are at it

  • Move prescriptions to a pharmacy chain with a branch near the campus
  • Book any outstanding dental, vision or specialist appointments before departure
  • If your student sees a therapist or psychiatrist, arrange either telehealth continuity or a local referral before term starts, not during the first crisis
