How is Solyo different from Naviance, CollegeVine, and other college planning tools?
Solyo is the only platform that combines real-time grade tracking, college matching, and AI counseling in one parent-focused dashboard. Unlike Naviance (sold to schools) or CollegeVine (built for students), Solyo works by reading your school emails, so you never need school permission or a separate portal login to get started.
Parents are stuck juggling 3-5 separate tools
If you are a parent of a college-bound high school student, your typical setup probably looks something like this: PowerSchool or Infinite Campus for grades, Canvas or Schoology for assignments, Naviance or Scoir through the school for college planning, and maybe CollegeVine or Niche on your own for research. That is four or five logins, four or five apps, and zero data flowing between them.
Solyo was built to solve this exact problem. It brings grade tracking, GPA calculation, college matching, financial aid guidance, and an AI counselor into a single platform designed specifically for parents.

Naviance: powerful but locked behind your school
Naviance is embedded in roughly 35 to 40 percent of U.S. high schools and offers scattergram data showing historical admissions outcomes. The problem: your school has to purchase it, and you can only access it through the school's portal. If your school does not use Naviance, you are out of luck. And even if it does, Naviance shows no grade data and offers no AI counseling.
Solyo does not require your school to adopt anything. You connect your Gmail, and Solyo reads the grade notifications, assignment updates, and event emails you already receive from PowerSchool, Canvas, and your child's teachers.
CollegeVine: great for students, not designed for parents
CollegeVine offers a free chancing calculator and an AI counselor called Sage. Both are useful tools. But CollegeVine is designed for students, not parents. It requires students to self-report their GPA (which introduces errors), has no grade tracking, and the company has been pivoting toward selling services to colleges rather than serving families.
Solyo pulls your child's grades directly from school email notifications, calculates both weighted and unweighted GPA automatically, and connects that real academic data to college matching. When your child's Chemistry grade changes from a B to an A-, Solyo instantly recalculates GPA and updates college match recommendations.
Niche: helpful reviews, but a different business model
Niche is a popular college research site with school reviews and rankings. What many parents do not realize is that Niche generates most of its revenue from colleges paying for student leads. That means the schools you see promoted are often paying for visibility. Niche also has no grade tracking, no GPA calculation, and no counseling features.
The all-in-one advantage
The biggest difference is integration. Other tools give you one piece of the puzzle. Solyo connects the pieces together. Your child's real grades feed into GPA calculations, which feed into college matching, which feeds into AI counselor recommendations. A grade change in one class can shift a college from "target" to "reach" in real time. No other platform does this.
Naviance requires school adoption. CollegeVine requires student self-reporting. Niche generates revenue from college advertising. Solyo is the only platform that combines automatic grade tracking, college matching, and AI counseling in one parent-focused dashboard, with no school permission needed.
