Arkansas Governor's Scholars Program - Achievement Scholars

Offered by Arkansas Division of Higher Education · Free to apply

The Governor's Scholars Achievement award pays up to $5,000 a year for four years ($20,000 total) toward tuition, mandatory fees and room and board at an Arkansas college. It is separate from the Governor's Distinguished Scholarship. Graduating seniors qualify in one of three ways: by earning Arkansas's Diploma of Distinction (public high schools only) through coursework finished by the end of spring semester, by earning an associate degree by the end of the summer after high school, or by being the top-scoring Academic Challenge applicant (ACT or SAT, GPA and class rank) in an Arkansas county where no Governor's Distinguished Scholar was selected. Students must be 12-month Arkansas residents, US citizens or permanent residents (or hold, or have a parent with, an Employment Authorization Document), take the ACT or SAT, file the FAFSA, and apply in the state's SAMS portal by July 1. It can be stacked with the Academic Challenge Scholarship. Renewal requires a 3.0 GPA and 27 then 30 credit hours a year.

What drives the odds here

Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.

  • Fewer rivalsOpen only to Arkansas residents
  • Fewer rivalsOpen to a single grade level only

How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
