BigFuture Scholarships

Offered by College Board · Free to apply

College Board's BigFuture Scholarships pay $500 and $40,000 awards through monthly drawings for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who complete college and career planning steps on their free BigFuture dashboard. Each step earns entries, such as saving three scholarships to a scholarship list, building a college list or saving careers, and each class year has its own deadline for each step. There is no essay, GPA or test score requirement; students need a College Board account and must attend school in the US, a US territory or a Department of Defense school. Students whose families earn less than $60,000 a year get two entries per step, and College Board reserves half of all awards for them. Drawings happen on the first of each month, and completing steps earlier means more drawings. This is the one no-essay drawing worth recommending: it is run by the nonprofit that runs the SAT and the steps are useful planning work anyway.

What drives the odds here

Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.

  • More rivalsOpen nationwide, so the field is large
  • More rivalsA large award draws far more applicants

How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
