Build Dakota exists because South Dakota employers need skilled workers, and much of its funding comes from industry sponsors who put money behind specific fields. That gives it a character closer to a private scholarship competition than to a typical state aid program. Build Dakota launched in 2015, seeded by an initial 25 million dollar gift from philanthropist T. Denny Sanford combined with a matching contribution from the South Dakota Future Fund. Since then, the fund has enabled more than 1,800 students to graduate debt-free. South Dakota's four technical colleges, Lake Area, Mitchell, Southeast, and Western Dakota, host a full ride covering tuition, fees, books, technology, and program tools in approved high-demand programs. The trade is three years of work in that field in South Dakota after graduating, often for the industry sponsor funding the award. Selection is competitive: Southeast Tech alone drew about 600 applicants for 176 awards in a recent cycle, and the fund awarded 630 new scholarships statewide in its largest year so far. The window runs January 1 to March 31, colleges pass files to sponsors as they arrive and some sponsors commit money early in the cycle, and applicants hear in May with all decisions out by late June. Out-of-state students may apply if they will relocate, and the award holds with a 2.5 GPA, full-time enrollment, and on-time completion.

How hard is the Build Dakota Scholarship to win?

Narrow eligibility keeps the applicant pool small, so a qualified student has a genuinely realistic shot. These are the awards worth prioritising.

What drives the odds here

Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.

  • Fewer rivalsOpen only to South Dakota residents
  • Fewer rivalsAn essay is required, which filters out casual applicants
  • Fewer rivalsAn official transcript is required
  • More rivalsA large award draws far more applicants

How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
