Cal Grant B (High School Entitlement)

Lower-income California seniors have a second guaranteed option that asks only for a 2.0 GPA, well below the Cal Grant A bar, though the income and asset ceilings are tighter. The first year pays an access award of about $1,648 for books, transportation, and living costs, and from the second year forward the same grant also covers full systemwide tuition and fees at UC, CSU, or an eligible private nonprofit. Current and former foster youth and students raising dependent children can receive a much larger access award, up to $6,000. The two required pieces, a FAFSA or California Dream Act Application plus a school-certified GPA, are both due March 2 of senior year, and the application window opens October 1. Because year one is small, read it as a foundation that grows, not the whole answer to freshman costs.
