The Gates Scholarship

Pell-eligible seniors who win this award have their full cost of attendance covered, minus whatever other aid and the Student Aid Index already pay, for up to five years of a four-year degree. About 300 students are picked each year through a phased review: an initial application, then semifinalist essays and a recommendation, then finalist interviews. Competitive applicants carry at least a 3.3 GPA, sit near the top of their class, and show sustained leadership or service. Applications open July 15 and close September 15. Semifinalists hear back over the winter, interviews follow in the spring, and scholars are named in April, with money reaching colleges the following summer.
