The award equals the undergraduate resident tuition rate at a SUNY state-operated campus, or actual tuition if that is lower, so at CUNY or a SUNY community college it covers tuition outright. The catch is the commitment attached to it: recipients agree to live in New York and work in an approved STEM occupation for five years after graduating, and a student who does not follow through has every award converted into a ten-year student loan plus interest.
