How hard is it to win the QuestBridge National College Match?

QuestBridge publishes its own funnel, which is rare in this world. For the 2025 cycle it named 7,026 finalists, and 2,550 of them matched to one of the 55 partner colleges, roughly one match for every three finalists. What it does not publish is a total applicant count for the latest cycle, so any applicant to finalist odds you see elsewhere are guesses. Two things soften the picture: applications are reviewed holistically with no absolute cutoffs for GPA, test scores, or income, and not matching is not the end, since finalists roll into QuestBridge Regular Decision with free applications to any partner college. Since founding, over 19,000 students have matched.

How much is the QuestBridge National College Match worth?

Over $360,000 across four years, by QuestBridge's current figure. The Match Scholarship covers the full cost of attendance: tuition and fees, housing and food, books and supplies, and even travel expenses. The structural details families should register: packages include no student loans and no parental contribution, and the money comes directly from the partner college rather than from QuestBridge, which is why sample award packages live on each college's financial aid page. It is not a check you can carry anywhere; the scholarship exists only at the single partner school you match with. Partner colleges have awarded over $7 billion in scholarships to QuestBridge Scholars since the organization's founding.

Is the QuestBridge Match binding, and can you still apply early anywhere else?

Matching is binding at every partner except MIT: if you match, you are committed to attend that college the following fall. While your rankings are live, the Early Application Policy also bars you from applying anywhere else through Early Decision or Single Choice (Restrictive) Early Action, though non binding routes survive: public universities with non binding early options, rolling admission, military academies, and early applications required for scholarship consideration are all allowed. The policy releases you completely if you do not rank colleges or are not named a finalist. And after an unsuccessful Match, Early Decision II in January is explicitly permitted, at QuestBridge partners or anywhere else.

What happens if you are a QuestBridge finalist but do not match?

You move into QuestBridge Regular Decision, which most finalists should plan on, since about two of every three finalists did not match in 2025. Starting November 4 you select partner colleges on the Regular Decision Form, due December 10, reusing your Match application with no application fees, getting a second look from colleges you ranked and adding new ones. The form alone finishes nothing: each college's own Regular Decision requirements are still due separately by its deadline. Admitted finalists receive aid meeting 100% of demonstrated need, and any finalist who enrolls at a partner through any round becomes a QuestBridge Scholar. QuestBridge's own caution belongs in your plan: also apply to target and likely non QuestBridge colleges.

What income and grades do typical QuestBridge finalists have?

The published profile: typical finalists come from households earning under $65,000 a year for a family of four with minimal assets, rank in the top 5 to 10% of their class, and earn primarily A's in the hardest courses their school offers. Among 2025 finalists, the average unweighted GPA was 3.9, 89% came from households under $65,000, and 86% qualified for free or reduced price school meals. Test scores are optional to apply; among finalists who did report them, the middle 50% ran 1290 to 1460 on the SAT and 27 to 33 on the ACT. The caveat QuestBridge itself insists on: review is holistic with no absolute cutoffs for GPA, scores, or income, so a family slightly over $65,000 is not automatically out, and 11% of finalists were.

How does ranking colleges work in the QuestBridge Match?

You rank up to 15 partner colleges in preference order by October 15, and you can match to only one: the school highest on your list that also chooses you. Colleges never see where you ranked them. Ranking is consequential in both directions: skip it and you are not considered for the Match Scholarship at all, only Regular Decision; rank a school casually and you may be bound to attend it. The published numbers argue for long lists of schools you genuinely want: 2025 recipients ranked 10 partners on average, 75% ranked 7 or more, and 68% still matched within their top 5. A Match Agreement Form signed by you, a parent or guardian, and your school counselor is due the same day as the rankings, which surprises procrastinating families every year.
