Wings Over America Scholarship
Offered by Wings Over America Scholarship Foundation · Free to apply
The Wings Over America Scholarship Foundation gives $5,000 scholarships to the children, spouses and grandchildren of U.S. Navy aviation personnel. The sponsor must be active duty, retired, honorably discharged or deceased and have served at least eight years of active duty, or active duty special duty, in a Navy aviation command or a command whose main mission supports Navy aviation, such as squadrons, air wings and carriers' aviation staffs. Children and grandchildren must be unmarried and within the foundation's age limits. Applicants must be graduating seniors or graduates of an accredited high school or home school, or current college or trade-school students. The process has two steps: an online pre-qualification that confirms dependent status and the sponsor's service, due February 1 at 5 PM Eastern, then a full application with transcripts, two recommendations, two essays, and activity, service and work history, due March 1. Some awards renew, and one application also covers partner scholarships the foundation administers.

What drives the odds here
Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.
- More rivalsOpen nationwide, so the field is large
- Fewer rivalsAn essay is required, which filters out casual applicants
- Fewer rivalsRecommendation letters are required, a step many applicants skip
- Fewer rivalsAn official transcript is required
- Fewer rivalsRequires a military or national-service connection
How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
