Wisconsin GI Bill (Children of Eligible Veterans)

Offered by Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) · Free to apply

The Wisconsin GI Bill is a state benefit, separate from the federal GI Bill, that waives full tuition and segregated fees for up to eight semesters or 128 credits, whichever is greater, at any University of Wisconsin System university or Wisconsin technical college. Children of eligible veterans qualify if the veteran has a VA service-connected disability rating of at least 30 percent or died while a Wisconsin resident, and the veteran either entered service as a Wisconsin resident or lived in Wisconsin for at least three consecutive years at the times the law specifies. The child must be at least 17 and not yet 26, and must meet the college's residency rules for in-state tuition. The veteran applies first through MyWisVets.com or with WDVA Form 2030, uploading the VA rating, then adds the child with a birth certificate. WDVA certifies eligibility, and the student gives that certification to the college's veteran certifying official. There is no fixed deadline, but certification should be done before the first term.

What drives the odds here

Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.

  • Fewer rivalsOpen only to Wisconsin residents
  • Fewer rivalsRequires a military or national-service connection
  • Fewer rivalsOpen to a single grade level only
  • More rivalsA large award draws far more applicants

How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
