Wisconsin Indian Student Assistance Grant

Offered by Wisconsin Higher Educational Aids Board (HEAB) · Free to apply

The Wisconsin Indian Student Assistance Grant gives need-based help to Wisconsin residents who are at least one-quarter Native American or enrolled members of a federally recognized tribe. Awards range from $250 to $1,100 a year and can be received for up to ten semesters. The grant is unusually flexible about where and how students enroll: it can be used at UW System universities, Wisconsin technical colleges, independent colleges, tribal colleges and for-profit schools based in Wisconsin, in undergraduate or graduate degree or certificate programs, and even at less than half-time enrollment. To apply, the student files the FAFSA and completes HEAB's Indian Student Assistance Grant application, then sends it to the tribal education or enrollment office, which certifies the student's Native American ancestry or tribal membership. That certification is needed only once; later applications use a shorter continuing-student form. The tribe and the Bureau of Indian Affairs are notified of the student's need so other tribal aid can be coordinated.

What drives the odds here

Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.

  • Fewer rivalsOpen only to Wisconsin residents
  • Fewer rivalsRestricted by racial or ethnic background
  • Fewer rivalsOpen to a single grade level only

How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
