paperwork, not a competition

Vermonters whose family income is $100,000 or less can attend the Community College of Vermont with tuition and the $100 administrative fee fully covered. The award is last-dollar: it stacks on the Pell Grant and the Vermont Grant and pays the balance, so there is nothing to write and no interview. It is triggered by two forms, the FAFSA and VSAC's Vermont Grant application, after which VSAC awards it automatically to anyone who qualifies. Course fees and textbooks are not included, so budget for those separately. No fixed closing date is published, but the state grant money behind it is finite and awarded as applications arrive, so submit both forms as soon as the FAFSA opens on October 1.

How hard is the 802 Opportunity Grant to win?

This is not a competition. Aid is allocated by a published formula, so meeting the criteria and filing on time is what determines whether the money arrives.

What drives the odds here

Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.

  • Fewer rivalsOpen only to Vermont residents
  • More rivalsA large award draws far more applicants

How Solyo estimates this: State programs that allocate by published formula are modelled on qualification and filing, not on competition, because there is no selection committee choosing between applicants. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
