Senior Year Checklist: College Application Deadlines 2026-27
Every college application deadline for 2026-27 in one parent checklist: early action dates, SAT and ACT sittings, FAFSA, CSS Profile, and UC filing windows.
The Common App is already open for the class of 2027, and the first early action deadlines land on October 15, just seven weeks away. If you have a high school senior at home, the next four months hold more hard deadlines than the previous three years combined, and most of them will reach you buried in a counselor newsletter or a school email you almost did not open.

This guide puts every major college application deadline for the 2026-27 cycle on one page, checked against the official College Board, ACT, Common App, federal, and university admissions sources. Work through it one month at a time and senior fall gets a lot calmer.
College Application Deadlines 2026-27 at a Glance

All dates below are for first-year applicants in the 2026-27 cycle. Individual colleges can shift deadlines, so confirm each date on the school's own admissions page as you build your family calendar.
Late August and September: Set the Foundation
September is the month that decides whether October and November feel organized or frantic. Three jobs belong at the top of the list.
1. Finalize the college list
The College Board's senior year application timeline tells students to narrow the list to between 5 and 10 colleges and to build one calendar holding every test date, application deadline, and financial aid form. 2. Ask for recommendation letters this week
Last September, my daughter asked her AP English teacher for a recommendation letter during the second week of school. By mid-October, that same teacher had stopped accepting requests because she already had more than a dozen letters promised. Popular teachers fill up fast, and the students who ask first tend to get the letters with real stories in them.
The College Board's official guidance matches that experience: ask a counselor or teacher for recommendations early in the fall, and give each one an outline of your student's academic record so they have specifics to work with.
3. Lock the test calendar
The Common App opened for the 2026-27 season at the start of August, so the application itself is live. On the testing side, the College Board's SAT calendar lists fall sittings on September 12, October 3, November 7, and December 5, 2026, with registration closing August 28, September 18, October 23, and November 20 respectively. The ACT's national schedule offers September 19 (late registration through September 1), October 17 (register by September 11), and December 12 (register by November 6).

For a November 1 early deadline, the October 3 SAT and October 17 ACT are the last safe sittings. Register now: the SAT deadline for October is September 18, and the ACT's is September 11.
A special case: QuestBridge closes October 1
If your family's income is limited and your senior's grades are strong, look at QuestBridge before anything else on this list. The National College Match application is due October 1, finalists rank their colleges by October 15, and Match results arrive December 1. Matched students receive early admission with a full four-year scholarship to a partner college, and the application is free.
By October 1 your senior should have a final list, teachers asked, an essay draft underway, and every remaining test registered. Everything in October and November gets easier from there.
October: Financial Aid Opens and the First Deadlines Hit
FAFSA and CSS Profile open October 1
The Department of Education has confirmed it is on track to launch the 2027-28 FAFSA form by October 1, 2026. That is the form this year's seniors use for freshman-year aid, and the same announcement promises prepopulated renewal data and lets parents reuse their information across multiple children. File in October rather than waiting: some aid is limited, and an early submission leaves time to fix mistakes.

October 15: the first early action wave
Three big public universities close early action on October 15, more than two weeks before the November 1 date most families have in mind.

The supporting materials get a short grace period: UGA accepts materials through October 29, and UT Austin through October 22. On the decision side, UNC releases early decisions by December 20 for North Carolina residents and by February 15 for everyone else, while UT Austin promises early action results or a deferral notice by January 15.
November 1: The Main Early Decision and Early Action Wave
At most selective private colleges that offer an early round, applications are due November 1 or November 15. Before anything is submitted, make sure everyone at the kitchen table understands what your senior is signing up for.

An early decision agreement is signed by the student, a parent, and the counselor. Treat it as a promise, and run every net price calculator before signing, because your family is agreeing to attend before comparing aid offers.
University of California: one window, no early round
The UC application works differently. It opened August 1 for fall 2027 applicants, and submissions are accepted only during the November 1-30 filing period. There is no early action or early decision at any UC campus: one application, one window, every campus. Do not let it drift to Thanksgiving weekend.
If your senior wants one more score for regular decision rounds, the November 7 SAT closes registration on October 23.
A simple November rule: early applications out by Halloween, the UC application submitted before Thanksgiving, and every regular decision essay in second draft by December 1.
December and January: The Finish Line
December opens with two dates on the same day: UT Austin's regular application deadline on December 1 and QuestBridge Match Day, when match results are released. The December 5 SAT (register by November 20) and December 12 ACT (late registration through November 29) are the last national test dates of 2026.
Mid-December brings the first early results, and with them either celebration or a quick pivot to the regular list. Then the final deadlines arrive: UGA regular decision closes January 1, UNC on January 15, and most selective private colleges in the first two weeks of January.
Senior grades still count
Early applications are judged on grades through junior year, but nearly every college also requires a mid-year report with first-semester senior grades, and admission offers are conditional on finishing strong. A quiet slide in a single class during application season is the classic trap: everyone is staring at essays and nobody is watching the gradebook.

- Parents own the master calendar: one shared calendar with every deadline from the table above, checked weekly
- Students own the content: essays, activity lists, teacher requests, and pressing submit
- Both watch the inbox: colleges flag missing documents, interview invitations, and portal updates by email, usually with short response windows
