Finalization Checklist for Each Supplement

Content Requirements

• [ ] Directly answers the prompt (reread prompt one final time)
• [ ] Includes specific, school-relevant details (not generic praise)
• [ ] Shows what you specifically could contribute to school
• [ ] Authentic voice (not trying too hard to impress)
• [ ] No clichés ("I'm hardworking," "I want to change the world")
• [ ] No recycled content from other schools' supplements

Word Count Accuracy

• Most supplements: 100-300 words (varies by school)
• Check EACH school's limit
• Count using actual word counter (built into Common App or Google Docs)
• Be EXACTLY at limit or just under (not over)

Example word counts:

• "Why do you want to attend [School]?" - typically 150-200 words
• "Tell us about yourself" - typically 250-300 words
• "Short answer" - typically 50-100 words

Writing Quality

• [ ] First sentence hooks reader (specific, interesting)
• [ ] Logical flow from sentence to sentence
• [ ] Specific examples, not vague statements
• [ ] Strong conclusion that ties back to opening
• [ ] No repetition of words/ideas
• [ ] Varied sentence structure (some short, some long)

Revision Process for Late October

Week 1 of October (if not done yet)

• Gather all supplement essay drafts
• Print them out if possible (easier to edit on paper)
• Read each one aloud
• Note sections that need work

Week 2-3 of October

• First revision: tighten writing, cut words if over limit
• Second revision: add specific details if too generic

"Why Us?" Essay Final Quality Check

Reread your "Why us?" essay and verify:

1. First sentence - Would this hook a busy admissions officer who's read 1000 essays?

   • STRONG: "Your Biomedical Engineering program uniquely combines neuroscience with computer-assisted surgery..."
   • WEAK: "I'm interested in [School] because it's an excellent university."

2. Specific details - Can I name 3-4 specific things about this school that ONLY this school has?

   • STRONG: "Professor X's research in [topic], the [specific club], study abroad program in [location]"
   • WEAK: "Great programs, good location, nice students"

3. Personal connection - Why does this school's specific feature matter to YOU?

   • STRONG: "Because I want to study X, and your school's program in Y aligns perfectly with my goal to Z"

4. Unique contribution - What would YOU bring to this school?

   • STRONG: "I would contribute [specific skill] to your [club/community] and learn [specific thing]"
